Picking up the Check

Picking up the Check

Tuesday night we were at a favorite restaurant with a favorite couple and I did one of my favorite things.

Near the end of the feast (see pic), I excused myself from the table, allegedly to go to the Men's Room, and paid the check.  I did this because the other couple has been very good to us and also frequently picks up the check.

When the time came to leave, the subject of the check arose and I explained it had been taken care of.  You should have heard the sincere howls of disapproval!  After it all calmed down, I explained my reasons and they vowed to pay next time and good feelings were shared by all.

Have you ever been on either side of this experience?

My answers to my question vary from taking turns picking up the check to the following:

  1. There are those, I know one couple who are notorious for sitting back, who never reach for the check
  2. There are those who only offer to pay the tip
  3. There are those who who offer to split the check (after ordering many expensive drinks and the most expensive entrees)
  4. There are times I pick up the check for someone who has extended priceless advice or service to me at no charge
  5. And there was the time we were on vacation in France having dinner with a fraternity brother who bolted at the end of the meal, never to be seen or heard from again!
